A peculiarity of the 2023/24 barley season was the delayed export activity due to logistics in the first months of the 2023/24 season (July-Nov), when the grain was shipped through the ports of the Danube region and by land. The 2023 barley harvest continued the declining trend and the export in 2023/24 decreased to 2.5 M mt (-9% compared to 2022/23).
The share of barley exports in total production fell to 45% in 2023/24 MY, the lowest in the last 10 years. Due to limited access to export logistics, wheat and corn were mainly exported in July-Dec 2023, with barley export shipments shifting to January-June 2024. This resulted in relatively low domestic prices and increased use of barley for domestic consumption.
The main 2023/24 export destinations
Key trend of 2023/24 MY was barley exports recovery to China, the exports doubled compared to 2022/23. However, it still cannot be compared with the 21/22 season, when 45% of total barley exports were shipped to China. Barley deliveries to Turkey decreased significantly due to the growing harvest in Turley and sufficient domestic stocks.
Russia mainly supplied grain to the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, with a relatively small share of long-distance exports to China, Indonesia and Bangladesh (up to 10% of total exports).
