Bulgaria: Oilseed 2025 surplus – helping or unusable? Navigating the crush margin

8 April, 2025 at 17:04

Key trends of the 2024/25 season:

  • Weather impact
  • Increased demand for oilseeds due to investments in the processing industry
  • Maximum local usage and reduction of oilseed exports
  • Increased dependence on raw material imports
  • Foreign policy factors leading to diversification of raw material suppliers.

Forecast for 2025/26 season

The 2024/25 prices encourage farmers to expand oilseeds area in 2025.

A limiting factor for SFS areas expansion is competition from cereals (increase in wheat and barley areas in 2025).

The 2025/26 S&D is currently based on a baseline scenario which foresees a reduction in SFS areas (-4% compared to 2024/25) and an increase in rapeseed areas (+17%).

In the March MARS report, forecasts for SFS and rapeseed harvest were reduced, but remain above last year’s figures and the 5-year average.
