UkrAgroConsult presents strategic study on irrigation systems in Ukraine

6 August, 2025 at 17:08

UkrAgroConsult, a leading consulting agency, presents its new market research “Irrigation systems in Ukraine. Current status and prospects”, which aims to become a key reference for farmers, investors, policymakers, and all stakeholders interested in the sustainable development of agriculture. The report focuses on the current condition of irrigation infrastructure, economic challenges, investment needs, and pathways for restoring irrigation systems in the face of climate change.

The study highlights the acute water crisis affecting a large part of Ukraine. Out of 2.2 mln ha of irrigated land, only 130 thsd ha are currently in use—less than 6% of the total potential. At the same time, irrigation is critical to ensuring stable production of 80–100 mln tons of grains and oilseeds annually, allowing Ukraine to remain a leading global food exporter.

The document offers an in-depth analysis of the status of public and private irrigation systems, including the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. Special attention is given to Water User Organizations, their role in irrigation recovery, and new models for water resource management.

A dedicated section assesses the financial needs of the sector, covering both public and international support, the potential for public-private partnerships, and opportunities for attracting investments from international financial institutions. The study also includes examples of successful projects from various regions of Ukraine.

UkrAgroConsult not only diagnoses the problem but also provides practical recommendations for those looking to make irrigation a part of a profitable agribusiness. The study is a valuable tool for strategic planning at both the company and national levels.
