Key topic. EU–India agreement: Strategic implications for Ukraine

3 March, 2026 at 15:03

The EU-India Free Trade Agreement does not provide full liberalization of agricultural markets and does not create a risk of massive Indian grain imports into the EU. The main changes are will primarily affect the non-GM soybean segment, processing dynamics, and rules of origin.

The most sensitive issue for Ukraine is the potential increase in competition in the non-GM soybean segment, which could gradually reduce premiums and strengthen negotiating pressure from European buyers.

Indirectly, the agreement may stimulate further development of processing capacity within the EU and reshape trade flows according to the model:

Exports of Ukrainian raw oilseed to the EU for processing and then products are exported to India.

Trend: the focus is shifting from trade volumes to market access rules, certification requirements, and value addition.

Ukraine strategy might be strengthening domestic processing and develop its position in the premium non-GM segment.
