Ukraine. Cargo handling in 2018 – grain sets a new record

24 January, 2019 at 17:01

Almost 30% of commodities handled in Ukrainian seaports was grain and its processed products. Last year, an increase in freight traffic was observed for all major cargo types, which provided nearly 80% of total handling volume: agricultural commodities, iron ore raw materials, various metal products and containers.

In 2018, seaports of Ukraine handled 41.38 MMT of grain cargoes (1.8% more than a year before). Despite pessimistic forecasts, the positive dynamics was supported by large exports during the last months of the year amid high corn production.

Once again, Mykolaiv, Chornomorsk, Yuzhny and Odesa ports handled most of Ukrainian grain in 2018.

According to Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, in 2018, handling of vegetable oils in Ukrainian sea ports remained at 5.54 MMT. This volume corresponds to the previous year’s record high.
