LLC UkrSorgo is going to cultivate sorghum in Kherson region and build a plant for processing this crop there, the Kherson state regional administration reports.
“The increasingly dry climate in the steppe zone of Ukraine requires an expansion of plantings of drought-resistant and heat resistant crops. Sorghum is just one of such crops suitable for the new climate conditions. Proceeding from the above, the suggestion to grow sorghum is assessed as economically justifiable and agronomically reasonable,” said the deputy head of the state regional administration.
The UkrSorgo management expects to begin the plant construction shortly after the signature of a cooperative agreement with the regional administration. As of today, the company actively cooperates with farming entities in Dnipropetrovsk region, reports UkrAgroConsult.
Noteworthy is that over 60% of the sorghum grown in Ukraine is shipped abroad. Ukraine exported 165 KMT of sorghum in MY 2016/17, or 40% more than a year ago. The key destination for Ukrainian sorghum exports is the European Union, which absorbed more than 83% of their total in MY 2016/17.
