Traditionally, export activity in January has used to decline because of numerous public holidays and frequent weather related constraints. However, this year’s January features unusually busy trade. According to UkrAgroConsult’s estimate, corn exports during its first twenty days totaled more than 3.6 MMT versus 2 MMT for the whole month of January 2021.

Exporters shipped abroad that much despite adverse weather conditions occurring from time to time both in ports and on inland communications. The ports stop operating for a limited period, but grain shipments can be generally described as uninterrupted.

If this rapid pace of shipments continues, January exports may close the month near 5 MMT. The previous record was set in January 2020, when corn shipments reached 4.5 MMT.
