23 October, 2024 at 17:10

CROP 2024/25

The 2024 yeallow peas production in Ukraine was 465 K mt, the best for the last three years, mainly due to an increase in sown area. Ukraine peas area was 212 K ha, 40% more y/y, but the yield of 2.19 mt/ha was lower than the long-term average and the 2023’s yield of 2.46 mt/ha.

Regions of Ukraine-top peas producers

– Odesa (147 K mt, yield of 2.45 mt/ha);

– Mykolaiv (76 K mt, yield of 2.18);

– Kirovograd (37 K mt, yield of 2.01 mt/ha);

– Kharkiv region (29 K mt, a yield of 1.48 mt/ha).

In Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, 2024 peas area doubled compared to 2023. The yields were highly dependent on rainfall in late April and May. Feed peas in crop rotation leave nitrogen in the soil giving a significant boost to the yields of subsequent crops.

Top peas importers, 2023/24

  • Turkey – 27% of total exports
  • Italy – 13%
  • Bangladesh – 12%
  • India – 9%
  • Malaysia – 6%

PEAS PRICE

The price of peas is high in the 2024/25. One of the drivers of this bullish trend is final lifting by India of 50% tax on peas imports. Initially the tax expired in the spring 2024, but then was extended three times until Dec. 31, 2024. Despite poor pea yield this year, high prices and the opening of new processing facilities in Ukraine will encourage farmers to increase their pea acreage in 2025.
