Will Romania continue to increase exports of rapeseed oil?

2 November, 2026 at 16:11

In 2025/26, Romania increased rapeseed oil exports to a record 175 thsd tons, supported by a larger rapeseed crop, additional raw material supplies from Moldova, and strong demand from the EU biodiesel industry.

However, prospects for further growth in rapeseed oil exports remain uncertain. Rapeseed price volatility and competition from Canadian canola weakened crushing margins at the beginning of the season. Meanwhile, lower raw material prices are creating conditions for margin recovery.

Active exports of rapeseed as a raw material are becoming the main risk for domestic crushers. Substantial shipments through Constanta could limit rapeseed availability for domestic processing in the second half of the season. At the same time, Romania is already importing Ukrainian rapeseed oil.

Additional uncertainty comes from drought, which has damaged winter rapeseed crops in western Romania, forcing farmers to replant some areas with cereals or switch to spring crops.

According to UkrAgroConsult, Romania is more likely to set a new record for rapeseed exports than to exceed its record rapeseed oil export volume in 2026/27. Further crushing prospects will depend on raw material availability, price trends, and competition between exporters and domestic processors.
